5 Tips for a Successful Family Fun Night

1.  Shut off the television. The purpose of family fun night is to build relationship, improve communication, develop character and values, and to simply enjoy time together in a relaxed and fun setting.

2.  Schedule Family Fun Night on the calendar. As a family, plan the dates and times each month for the family fun night and make sure everyone gets the date(s) on their calendar. This is especially important as your children grow into teens and begin to have full schedules with sports, school activities, work, and social time with friends.

3.  Everyone participates. The whole point of family fun night is to have fun together. This means everyone needs to participate for the event to be successful.

4.  Everyone gets along. No arguing, fighting, put downs, or discipline allowed. Everyone should come to family night with a smile and be ready to laugh!

5.  Make time for spontaneous fun. Family Fun Night needs to have general structure and maybe a special theme to it; however, don't have every moment scheduled with busy activities. Leave time for discussion, laughing, questions, hugs and kisses.

I Love You Heart Shaped Eggs

Treat your loved ones to this very cute and easy to make breakfast.  Valentine's Day

Ingrediants:
Heart shaped cookie cutter (at least 3 1/2 by 3 inches)
1 slice of bread per Heart Shaped Egg served
2 to 4 tsp of butter
1 egg per Heart Shaped Egg served

Take the cookie cutter and cut a heart shaped hold in the center of the slice of bread.  Melt butter in a frying pan.  Add the bread then break the egg into the heart shaped hole in the bread.  When the bread is a golden brown on the bottom side take a spatula and turn the bread and egg over.  Add a tsp of additional butter to the frying pan.  Fry until the egg is perfectly cooked through.

This is a child friendly recipe and can be used for any special occasion by selecting a holiday appropriate cookie cutter.

How to Enjoy Outdoor Family Fun during the Winter Months

First SnowAfter the holidays are gone and everyone gets settled back into the daily routine of school, work, and other daily activites the winter blues can set in.  There are many ways to spend quality family time together indoors, but sometimes it just feels good to get outside for a while.

Consider one of the following activities on the next sunny winter day.  Be sure to bundle everybody up in layers of socks, long underwear, hats, and gloves before heading outdoors!

  • Build snow forts, select teams, and have an old fashioned snowball fight.
  • Go sledding
  • Ice-skate at an outdoor rink (Caution - do not ice-skate on any lake.  The risk of falling in is NOT worth it).
  • Shovel snow together as a family.
  • Build a snow family in the front yard.  Be sure to dress each snowperson appropriately.  Make it fun for friends and neighbors to view as they drive by your home.
  • Take a walk to a local park and discuss how the plants, grass, and trees go dorment during the winter.  Discuss how spring will be coming soon and how the foliage will begin to grow again.
  • Drink hot chocolate with marshmellows on the desk or back porch.

Be aware of the temperature and I would recommend planning an indoor activity if the temperature is lower than 32 degrees.

Plan for 10 to 15 minute intervals of playing outdoors. Schedule an indoor activity such as sitting in front of the fireplace reading a aloud a favorite book immediately after the outdoor activity to warm everyone up and extend the family fun for a few extra minutes.
